Sphynx

Imagine if you will; you are in the historic Egyptian Theater in Park City, Utah.

The play is about to begin.

The lights go down and a spotlight comes on.

A man walks out onto the stage to introduce the play with this beauty on his shoulder.

Talk about bringing the house down before the play even begins!

Sphynx

Sphynx was once a working cat at The Egyptian.

My sister worked as a Stage Manager there and fell in love with him,

who wouldn’t?

She started fussing over him, loving on him and babying him.

He loved it!

Sphynx decided he liked being fussed over

more than he liked his job at The Egyptian

and would no longer let anyone near him but my sister.

The Manager through up his hands in disgust and told sis to

‘just take him home, he’s made his decision’.

Sphynx

Now Sphynx is coming out of retirement.

He has decided to keep his grandma company at her house

which just happens to be in a MUCH warmer climate,

something important for a hairless cat.

Sphynx

There is an issue, and I’m hoping our Cat Blogosphere friends can help.

Sphynx is scratching up Grandma’s couch and rugs.

He as a scratcher pole, but is really doing some damage with the furniture.

Sphynx

I’ve given Grandma what advice I can,

but it sure would be appreciated to hear what your solutions to this issue are.

Thanks everyone!

Tell her to be certain to cover all living room furniture with even sheets f necessary. But a sturdy fabric. Throws. They make a lot of throws in canvas-like aterials, but anything will do. She can take them off when company comes, but pet people understand the covering.

He is certainly absolutely majestic and handsome. As JUNE is the ultimate scratcher (even hardwood floors, wood furniture, you name it, she will claw and scratch it!). This is in spite of having 3 scratching posts, and 3 scratching rounders on the floor, all in a small one-room studio! Nothing is safe. She has
her annual vet exam in about 6 weeks and top of the list is to ask for a very close examination of her paws to ensure there is nothing amiss, as I am concerned about them, this is obsessive/compulsive behavior I’ve not seen in other cats I’ve had. If I learn anything I will share it. Right now am at a loss about this issue.

Sphynx is gorgeous! There is a two-sided sticky tape that I purchase and put on the couch and chair when the cats decided they wanted to scratch them. It really helped. Also, maybe put the scratching pole next to the furniture Sphynx is scratching.

What a gorgeous cat! Our Callie is a scratcher but not to that extent. Sometimes, she does it for attention and other times to file down her claws. We trim her claws in between vet visits. We’ve covered our furniture and have scratchers available.

A good manicure at the vet.
A spray anti-cat for furniture- they exist.
A scratch board, large, on which you put the darling every time he scratches with a no-no before.

Wow what a cool cat Sphynx is……
The scratching deal is not good tho’. I do not know the name of the product I know there is a spray that I have bought from my Pet Supply Store that worked very well…. It is Hagen Aerosol Indoor Cat Repellant spray. I am sure you have different brands where you are.
Also Cinnamon is a good repellant if you do not mind smelling like a Cinnamon Bun bakery!
I hope you can sort out the cat scratching problem!

    This is what I’ve read:
When the cat goes to scratch at a location that the person doesn’t want, the cat needs to be distracted at that moment with a toy or move a scratcher to right in front of where the cat wants to scratch.
Then, when the cat scratches to correct thing, the person can then start moving the scratcher back to a convenient location.
If anyone mentions declawing, I’m going to get angry!

    A couple of suggestions.

Scratchers right in front of whatever is being scratched, with some catnip sprayed on to attract Sphynx if he likes it.

Lots of praise and treats for scratching those scratchers.

Softpaws, the glue-on nails for cats. Have the vet glue on the first full set, then you only have to replace them one at a time as they come off.

A good nail trimming on a regular basis if softpaws are not an option.

Feliway cat spray if the scratching is a territory thing, to calm him and let him know it’s already his territory.

Let us know how it goes!

Sphynx is so hadsome! Wow! It looks like there are some good suggestions above. We agree about the sticky tape. Also, maybe make sure he has both vertical and horizontal scratching opportunities. Good luck!
