DIY Litter Box

Mr. HIgh Rise Heinie – Gandy

Litter boxes come in all shapes and sizes, covered, uncovered, self cleaning, front entrance, top entrance, small, large and so on. These differences are designs that cater to the differences in cats preferences and behavior.

I have a stunningly handsome mancat (see above) that likes to raise his back haunches up when he tinkles. There is not a litter box on the market that I have found that has sides high enough to stop that high-rise tinkling from hitting walls, floor, etc., etc.

Because of the behavior of that precious but challenging boy, I had to be creative. The solution that I found is Sterlite Storage boxes. They are usually under $10 and have smooth bottoms. Don’t get a storage box with deep grooves on the bottom for stacking – that traps some nasty stuff.

Another thing about Sterlite Storage boxes is that the plastic is really smooth and easy to scoop and clean.

Step One: Trace a circle using a plate with a magic marker.

Step Two: Cut along that line to make an entrance to the litter box/storage container.

Step Three: The edges will be a little jagged – smooth them out by cutting off the sharp edges with a box cutter.

You’re all done! Easy Peasy.

The nice thing about these storage containers is that they come with lids, so if you want a covered litter box, just fasten on the lid. If your cat prefers a top entry, cut a hole in the lid rather than the box. If you have multiple cats and some like a ground entry and some like a top entry, do both!

I cut my entrance on the long side of the box rather than the short side. This is to keep my boy from aiming out the entrance. It is much more comfortable for him to stand lengthwise to do his business – and that points his heinie to the sides rather than the entrance.

    I lift my butt to pee too. TW bought a box with a half hood—the back half—the used a smell pee pad in the back. It works. Your idea is cool too but TW has nothing to cut the door out.
